Maureen Duncan and Felipe Razo were our guest presenters. They presented highlights of their most recent trip to Guatemala. They assisted high school students with training of necessary skills that will help keep them in school and also help their families. This cohort of students, make soaps with local Mayan resources and then sell them to the community. They wish to further their studies, but due to the lack of teacher training they often times fail to pass the tests needed for entrance into a college or university. Often times, due to economic constraints, they also drop out of school to get a job, or young women get pregnant. Maureen and Felipe helped assist them with various classes and mentoring. They also visited their families and learned more about their backgrounds. Ultimately, our club would like to assist this group to continue their education, so that they can have a better future. We explored the idea of rallying help from outside sources and clubs to start a scholarship fund.
