Meeting began with brief introductions. First, Adriana Alarcon, a native of Manta, Ecuador, presented herself to the group. 10 years ago she came to San Diego as a Rotary Peace Scholar at USD. Now, Adriana works for the Ecuadorian government on various humanitarian projects. Adriana, notably helped our club with the Earthquake Economic Development grant back in 2017. She explained that it was a joint effort from Rotary Clubs of San Diego, Manta and also local church organizations. Recently, she met with beneficiaries of the grant and they have all been successful. Many have gone on to hire more employees and are on a sustainable path of economic development. The Rotary Club of Manta continues to assist these beneficiaries with trainings and additional resources. Adriana explained that it was very rewarding to experience first hand the completion of a very successful project that has made a tremendous impact in the lives of many.
Another introduction followed. Mario Arias, a native of Quito. He is very involved with Medical Brigades which works in tandem with various universities in the United States. He also is affiliated with Adopt-A village. He ended a long career in the military working in aviation. He now uses his knowledge assisting brigade teams all around Ecuador to execute medical and water sanitation projects. He would like to join our club and has submitted his application.
