Meeting began with brief introductions and a warm welcome to our guests. Our guests Jason Sirie and Ruben Camacho represented First Command financial services.
Fernando was officially inducted as the newest member of the club. Fernando has had over 15 years of experience with Rotary clubs in Tijuana along with being director for the Tijuana YMCA.
Following the induction, Carmen made a few announcements.
First item on the agenda was a district wide project to help our military service members and families at Camp Pendleton. Gently used or new childrens’ toys, strollers, food, furniture, blankets, and/or monetary donations are being collected. On October 24th, a picnic style event will be held on base to distribute these items to more than 60 families.
Carmen then announced that she is organizing a project to help needy students in Tijuana. This is a new project, but in continuation of the previous project that was held to distribute backpacks to students. She has a total of 50 backpacks that have been donated by former DG from Torrance, Ted Jones. The goal is to get these 50 backpacks filled with school supplies and then distribute them to impoverished students from another school. It was discussed, that once these are filled it can be a potential club project for members to go in person and distribute these backpacks.
Moreover, she discussed the need to host and organize a club fundraising activity. An idea that was proposed was hosting a Ruta de Vino (winetasting) tour in the Valle de Guadalupe area.
Lastly, she mentioned that our DG, Martha Knight, will be presenting to our club on November 13th. Carmen suggested hosting the meeting at a different venue, such as the Coronado Golf Club. Guest, Jason Sirie, also offered a meeting room in his building. Venue options will be reviewed further.
Presentation titled, “7 Mistakes to Avoid in Pursuing Financial Goals”, proceeded. Ruben highlighted the following seven mistakes:
- Waiting to plan for financial security
- Not knowing how much you need for retirement
- Failing to participate in the thrift savings plan
- Not having an insurance strategy
- Failing to plan for goals other than retirement
- Worrying about things that you can’t control
- Underestimating your survivors’ income needs
Meeting concluded with a few questions and prizes from First Command. Next meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 9th at 6pm, location TBA.
